Midi ShawWho am I?

Midi Shaw, Associate Broker, GRI, ABR, SRS, ePRO

I am a REALTOR® based on St. Simons Island, Georgia. Beyond that, like all of us, I am many things.  Because of the nature of our industry, I am also an Independent Contractor. This means that I am self-employed and that my real estate business is essentially my own small business regardless of the fact that I work under contract with Coldwell Banker Platinum Partners.

As such, I have no ceilings, no limits to what I can do within the realm of this industry or beyond.   After spending several years working with buyers and sellers, getting as much education as I could to hone my skills and knowledge base, and learning what I could about the technology that was quickly changing the face of our industry, I found myself drawn to education.  Afterall, what is it that we do with our clients everyday?  I always say that we cannot make our clients do anything.   Anything they do or do not do is ultimately up to them. The best we can do is educate them so they can make the best, informed decisions and ensure their best interests are protected.

So now, trying to define who I am as a REALTOR® is difficult.  Sure, I still represent buyers and sellers in their real estate transactions, continuing to educate them as best I can.  But now, I have also become an educator, an licensed instructor, developing and teaching courses for my fellow agents as well as those who want to start a career in real estate.

TechLogoHand in hand with all that, my early interests in technology paid off with much of my business coming as a direct result of my personal website.  Visitors to this site appreciate the information I provide with no strings attached and the effort it takes on my part to put all this in writing.  Through what they read and learned, they felt comfortable that I was the agent for them.  No hard sell. None of this trying to grab you as soon as you enter my site.  I don’t respond to sites like that so I would never expect anyone else to.

This interest, fortuitously,  evolved into a side gig for me.   As technology grew and radically altered the way we do business today, my ‘tech-iness‘ became a strong asset as other agents in my market sought me out for help and assistance with their own technology-challenged business.  My success here lies in the fact that I am not an IT person.  I have degrees in two of the most liberal of liberal arts majors: English and Art History! What I do have is the ability and creativity to explain the technical in a way the average REALTOR® can understand.  I think the same applies to all that teach… whether it’s explaining the intricacies of the purchase and sale contract to a client, the Code of Ethics to a classroom full of REALTORS® or government regulations to a bunch of students studying for their licensing exam.

What do these mean?Over the years also, I became interested the in the operations of the organization of which we REALTOR® are members.  I perceived a system of the ‘old guard’ running things in ‘old ways’ and felt that our association needed an infusion of new, young blood.  So I grew  increasingly involved with our local Association of REALTORS®. Today, I am on both the Board of Directors for the Association and our local MLS.  I will be the President-Elect in 2010 which means I will be President of the association in 2011! I chair the Technology Committee (surprise!), serve on both the Education and Orientation Committees and I am actively involved with leadership at the state level with the Georgia Association of REALTORS®.  The funny thing is that I found a tremendous positive response to my involvement with my association.  It turns out, that’s what they wanted. They wanted ‘new blood’ to offer fresh perspectives for changing times.  The old guard existed because very few people are willing to volunteer their time and make the effort.

What this ultimately means is that I am fully immersed in the real estate industry. For my clients, this means that they are working with someone who is completely committed and dedicated to this industry and isn’t dabbling in real estate, trying to make a fast buck or simply foolin’ around.  It means I am up to speed on the technology to enable me to take full advantage of everything it has to offer in the way of marketing, communications and time management.  It means I know enough to know I don’t know everything… but I will do my best to learn everything I can.  It means that what I do know, I will gladly share with anyone who wants to know more.

It means I have a genuine desire to help people succeed…

My Involvement with Industry or Proof That I am Indeed a  Busy-Body.
